Constable Nathan Kirwa was arrested on Monday on the outskirts of Eldoret town, two days after the Sunday evening shooting that killed Doris Murei.
He had gone into hiding following the incident.
Uasin Gishu County Police Commander Wilberforce Sicharani confirmed the arrest and said the firearm believed to have been used in the shooting has been recovered.
According to Sicharani, the officer fired at least five shots at Murei, who died at the scene.
Preliminary investigations point to a possible romantic relationship between the two that had turned sour, though police are yet to establish a conclusive motive.
Kirwa is expected to be arraigned at the Eldoret Law Courts on Tuesday.
Reports indicate the constable was attached to the security detail of the Uasin Gishu Governor, although this is yet to be confirmed by police.
