'Come and record your statement in Wamunyoro,' Gachagua tells DCI over Dr. Victoria Mutiso's murder claims

Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua has challenged Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Mohamed Amin to travel to his Wamunyoro home and record his statement over alleged communication with suspects linked to the murder of researcher Dr. Victoria Mutiso.

Gachagua and Amin have clashed over the ongoing investigation, with the DCI boss alleging that the former Deputy President was in contact with two key suspects in the case.

Gachagua has dismissed the allegations, challenging Amin to come to Wamunyoro if he wants to question him, while insisting that he will not present himself at the DCI or police offices.

"I was in Wamunyoro and if there was someone who called you, come to my place and write a statement because I cannot come to DCI or to the police, I am past that level; I am now in the level of a president. Kenyans are not fools, Mr Amin,” said Gachagua.

Hours before the DCI addressed the media on Friday, Gachagua took to social media challenging investigators to publicly name the police officers he claimed were involved in the murder, saying he would release the names himself if the agency failed to do so.

Gachagua also accused the DCI of using the press briefing to cover up what he described as the involvement of police officers in Dr. Mutiso's killing.

"Bwana DCI, I have seen you have called a press conference to cover up the police killers of Dr Victoria Nthunya Mutiso and then fix some boda boda riders. I have the names of the three police killers from Murkomen’s community whom you have been instructed to cover up. We shall release the details after your presser if you attempt a cover up,” he added.

The latest confrontation follows Gachagua's earlier claims that police officers were behind Dr. Mutiso's killing and that investigators were attempting to shield those responsible.

"Sasa huyo mama ameuwawa na polisi na wanaficha,” Gachagua had claimed.

However, during the press briefing, DCI Amin alleged that investigators had established communication between Gachagua and Daniel Mwangi Njoroge, whom detectives describe as a key suspect in the murder.

Investigators allege that Njoroge drove the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado that was used to block the Uber vehicle Dr. Mutiso was travelling in before she was fatally shot, and that he coordinated the movement of the suspects.

"We have found out that Gachagua has been in communication with our main suspect in this murder,” Amin noted.

Amin further alleged that Gachagua had also communicated with Kelvin Kinuthia, the boda boda rider investigators claim ferried the suspected gunman to the crime scene in Nairobi's Upper Hill.

"He was also in communication with the boda boda rider,” he added.

The DCI boss accused Gachagua of interfering with the murder investigations, claiming his public statements nearly compromised efforts to apprehend the suspects, who investigators say were attempting to flee the country.

"Since Gachagua spoke of this matter, all those officers went under. We were able to arrest some attempting to cross the borders,” said Amin.

Gachagua has maintained that he continues to receive information from government officers and intelligence officials, insisting that the identities of his sources will remain confidential.

"All officers and NIS officers giving us information, we shall protect the confidentiality of the information you give us. We cannot be foolish,” stated Amin.

The DCI says investigations into Dr. Mutiso's murder are ongoing, maintaining that detectives will pursue every lead as they seek to establish those behind the killing.
