Coach Amonde confirms Shujaa exit, full focus now on KCB RFC

KCB RFC head coach Andrew Amonde has confirmed his departure from the Kenya Sevens, Shujaa technical setup, following the Kenya Rugby Union’s decision to terminate his appointment.

Speaking exclusively after KCB’s 10-7 quarter-final victory over varsity side Black Blad at the Kabeberi Sevens on Sunday, Amonde said the development was unfortunate but his immediate focus remains on the club.

“I just got that news recently. It’s unfortunate. I will not be part of Kenya Sevens after parting ways with the Union. Now my focus is with the team, KCB, and giving them full attention to see how much we can grow,” Amonde said.

The KRU communicated his termination through a revocation letter dated August 9, citing a contractual clause that bars national team coaches from holding similar coaching positions at club level.

Amonde, who recently attained his World Rugby Level II coaching certification, had been serving as a strength and conditioning coach within the Shujaa setup alongside head coach Kevin Wambua and assistant coach Louis Kisia.

Asked about the legality of the process, the former Shujaa captain declined to be drawn into the dispute, insisting his priority is rugby on the field.

“Whether it was legal or illegal, rugby is a sport played on the field and not in the courts. It’s not something that’s in my DNA,” he said.

Having spent more than 15 years as a player and two years in coaching within the national team, Amonde admitted that balancing his responsibilities at KCB with the national team had been demanding.

“Coaching KCB is not easy either, especially with 15s and 7s. Having that free time with KCB will enable me to focus,” he added.

Amonde said he was saddened by the decision but credited friends and partners for encouraging him through the transition. He also maintained that he remains available to contribute to Shujaa if called upon.

“I’m still part of Kenya Sevens. If my input is required, I will be able to chip in.”

Meanwhile, KCB, the defending Kabeberi Sevens champions, advanced to the semi-finals after edging Black Blad 10-7 and will face Harlequins for a place in the final.

For Amonde, the immediate task is clear: steering KCB through the tournament while building a competitive side capable of challenging on both the 15s and 7s fronts.
