Co-op Bank ranked 120th globally in Forbes’ Tier Six category for small banks. Equity Group Holdings performed better, ranking 71st in the Tier Five lower mid-sized banks category, while KCB Group ranked 79th among Tier Five mid-sized banks. Stanbic Holdings ranked 138th in the Tier Six small banks category.
The rankings were based on the banks’ performance across four key areas: profitability, growth and earnings quality, capital and funding resilience, and asset quality and efficiency.
Profitability carried the highest individual weighting at 30 percent, with Forbes assessing measures such as return on average assets, cost-to-income ratio and net interest margin.
Growth and earnings quality accounted for 20 percent and considered factors including earnings growth and stability, as well as customer deposit growth over three-year periods.
Capital and funding resilience contributed 25 percent, based on indicators such as capital strength and the loan-to-deposit ratio.
The remaining 25 percent assessed asset quality and efficiency, including credit quality, risk management and the overall resilience of banks’ balance sheets.
The rankings therefore measure banks not only by profitability, but also by their ability to grow sustainably, maintain strong capital and funding positions, and manage risks effectively
