Chipu crowned Rugby Africa Barthes Cup Champions

The 2024 Barthes Cup tournament came to a conclusion on Sunday evening at the Harare Sports Club, in Harare, Zimbabwe with Kenya emerging victorious after beating hosts and defending champions Zimbabwe 28-13.

The tournament, played in a round-robin format, culminated in Chipu's triumph after registering three consecutive wins.

The Kenyan U-20 rugby side, popularly known as Chipu, had a smooth road to the title, marked with impressive wins in all three matches of the tournament.

They began with a tricky clash against Namibia, where Kenya emerged victorious with a score of 34-28.

They continued their winning streak with a dominant display against Tunisia, securing a commanding 56-23 victory.

Then the stage was set for the final showdown against hosts Zimbabwe, where Kenya's mettle was truly put to the test.

Zimbabwe took an early lead with two quick unconverted tries, leaving Kenya trailing 10-0 past the quarter-hour mark.

However, Kenya's resilience shone through as Iddo Kuta swiftly responded with a crucial try, converted by James Olela, narrowing the gap and injecting momentum into Kenya's campaign.

As the first half drew to a close, Kenya surged ahead with Michael Wamalwa and Patrick Wainaina crossing over the try line, propelling Kenya into the lead with a score of 17-10 at halftime.

The team's relentless pursuit of victory was evident as they capitalised on opponents' errors at will heading to the break leading.

Upon resumption, Kenya maintained their momentum, demonstrating exceptional defensive prowess and tactical astuteness to thwart Zimbabwe's attacks and extend their lead.

Despite Zimbabwe's valiant efforts, Kenya remained resolute, James Olela slotting home a penalty to stretch Kenya's lead to 20-10.

KCB's youngster Andicole Omolo went over the chalk to touch down a try, and Philip Okeyo missed the twos.

Okeyo went on to redeem himself booting a penalty to take matters 28-13 in favour of Kenya.

Kenya kept the zest and zeal to command proceedings to the end, holding onto the lead thus clinching the prestigious Rugby Africa Barthes Cup.
