Kenya and China have renewed efforts to strengthen cultural and creative industry cooperation following the launch of the China-Hunan Film Week in Nairobi, an event that brings Chinese cinema to Kenyan audiences while creating opportunities for collaboration between filmmakers from the two countries.
The China-Hunan Film Week officially opened in Nairobi on Monday, bringing together government officials, filmmakers and cultural stakeholders from Kenya and China in a bid to strengthen cultural exchanges and cooperation through film.
Speaking during the opening ceremony, Minister Counsellor and Deputy Chief of Mission at the Chinese Embassy in Kenya, Zhang Zhizhong, described film as an important window into a country's culture and a powerful tool for fostering mutual understanding between peoples.
Zhang said the film week comes at a time when China and Africa are marking the Year of People-to-People Exchanges, adding that cultural engagement remains a key pillar in strengthening relations between the two sides.
He noted that the event will give Kenyan audiences an opportunity to experience Chinese culture, development and society through cinema.
"Through these films, our friends in Kenya can experience the true face of China, the pulse of its development and the charm of its culture," he said.
The film showcase features eight Chinese films, including productions from Hunan Province, one of China's leading cultural and media hubs.
Deputy Director of the Information Office of the People's Government of Hunan Province, Luo Zhengmao, said the initiative seeks to deepen friendship and cultural understanding between Kenya and China through storytelling and artistic expression.
Luo highlighted Hunan's growing role in China-Africa cooperation, noting that the province hosts the China-Africa Economic and Trade Expo and serves as a pilot zone for in-depth China-Africa economic and trade collaboration.
He also showcased Hunan's cultural and tourism attractions, including the UNESCO-listed Zhangjiajie Scenic Area, Dongting Lake and the historic Yuelu Academy.
Kenya Film Commission Chief Executive Officer Timothy Owase welcomed the initiative, saying film remains a universal language capable of connecting people across cultures and borders.
Owase said partnerships such as the China-Hunan Film Week create opportunities for collaboration between filmmakers from the two countries, including talent exchange, skills development and co-production ventures.
"Film transcends borders, breaks down barriers and allows us to see the world through each other's eyes," said Owase.
He added that Kenya continues to position itself as a preferred destination for international film productions and creative partnerships.
The China-Hunan Film Week is expected to feature film screenings and cultural engagements aimed at promoting mutual learning and strengthening ties between Kenya and China through the creative arts.
