China has extended a USD 2 million (Ksh.259 million) cash grant to Kenya to support Ebola preparedness and mitigate the effects of drought.
The grant includes USD 1 million to strengthen Ebola preparedness infrastructure in counties classified as high- and very high-risk, and another USD 1 million to support drought response efforts.
The funds were handed over at the National Treasury during a ceremony attended by Chinese Ambassador to Kenya Guo Haiyan, National Treasury Principal Secretary Dr Chris Kiptoo and Public Health Principal Secretary Mary Muthoni.
Ambassador Guo said the assistance reflected China’s commitment to strengthening development cooperation with Kenya under the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) and the Global Development Initiative (GDI).
Dr Kiptoo welcomed the support, commending China for responding promptly to Kenya’s request for assistance.
The grant is expected to support the government’s efforts to strengthen epidemic preparedness and respond to drought-related challenges.
