Cherop, Kiptoo punch tickets for Africa Junior Championships

Cherop clocked nine minutes, 8.34 seconds ahead of Joyline Chepkemoi who finished second in 9:16.03 as the duo sealed their tickets to the continental championships slated for April 29- May 3 in Lusaka, Zambia.

"It was great competing against Joyline after we faced off at during the cross country. I know we will make a strong team since we are wary of Ethiopians. I am however confident we are going to deliver and bring medals home'," said Cherop who trains in Iten, Elgeyo Marakwet County.

After placing sixth at the World Cross Country Championships in Australia, Chepkemoi is now eyeing a podium finish in Zambia.

"I thank God for enabling me to make the cut in Team Kenya once again. I am optimistic I am going to do well in the championships," said Chepkemoi.

In the boy’s category, Andrew Kiptoo triumphed in eight minutes and seven seconds ahead of Clinton Kimutai who finished second in 8:02.64 as Evans Kipkosgei settled for third in 8:05.70

"I am very happy to win this race and qualify to represent my country at the Africa Championships. I am promising my compatriots to bring a gold medal," he said.

Diana Cherotich claimed victory in the girls 5000m under-20 category after clocking 16:13.32 ahead of Maurine Jepkoech who finished second in 16:20.13.

Valentine Gesare and Amos Kipkemoi emerged victorious in the 400m hurdles under-18 category girls and boys respectively.
