Tanzania's
JKT Queens were crowned CECAFA Women’s club championship winners on Tuesday after
edging out Rwanda’s Rayon Sports in a 1-0 at the Moi International Sports
Center Kasarani Stadium in Nairobi.
The tight
encounter saw JKT Queens dominate possession, creating several attempts but
Rayons Sports goalkeeper's good reflexes kept the goals at bay for most of the
match.
Forward Winfrida
Gerald scored the all-important goal in the fifth minute via a strong header to
put them ahead.
JKT Queens displayed resilience and tactical discipline throughout the match, shutting down Rayon Sports’ attacks while maintaining composure under pressure.
Their organized defense, coupled with quick counterattacks, proved decisive
against the Rwandan outfit, who had been one of the tournament’s strongest
contenders.
“This
victory means everything to us. The players have worked hard, shown
determination, and now we can proudly carry the CECAFA flag to the continental
stage,” said the team’s head coach in a post-match interview.
The win
marks JKT Queens’ second CECAFA title, signaling Tanzania’s continued rise in
women’s football. The victory also follows in the footsteps of fellow Tanzanian
club Simba Queens, who have been regional powerhouses in recent years.
Kenya
Police Bullets secured the bronze medal after overcoming Kampala Queens in the
third-place playoff, ensuring the host nation also celebrated podium success.
With
their triumph, JKT Queens not only lifted the regional trophy but also boosted
hopes for a strong East African presence in the CAF Women’s Champions League,
set to be held later this year.
