CAVB: Kenya keen to floor Algeria in high-octane African Championships quarter finals clash

Omondi  says  his charges will do everything possible to keep the continental trophy on home soil with an Olympic 2028 ticket up for grabs.

Speaking ahead of Tuesday’s encounter, Omondi revealed that the technical bench has spent time fine-tuning tactical details as they a flawless show against the North African former champions.

“We are just polishing up on a few things that we were not very clear with, but so far, so good. We are ready for the quarter-finals against Algeria,” Omondi declared.

“We are improving on speed and accuracy in terms of service, setting and blocking. We are here for a win. We want to retain the trophy at home, and we will employ all strategies to ensure we retain it. We will do everything to win against Algeria,” the tactician added.

Omondi noted that while his technical bench has thoroughly analysed the Algerians, he remains tight-lipped regarding specific tactical surprises.

“We have seen them play, we have seen their tactics and their services and we are working round the clock to make sure we beat them.

"I will not divulge a lot about our game plan because walls have ears, but we will adjust as per their game,” said Omondi emphasizing the need to sharpen net blocking against slow-paced high balls.

Team captain Medina Sande echoed her coach’s optimism, confirming that the squad is in high spirits following an unblemished campaign that has seen Kenya sweep every opponent in straight sets (3-0).

“We are prepared and very ready, as you can see. Every player is psyched up. Taking it one game at a time is a great motivation, more so winning each and every match 3-0.

Now we are working on key areas in reception, service, and other aspects where we saw gaps during the earlier rounds to ensure we improve for the coming matches,” Sande affirmed.

The ten-time African champions booked their quarter-final ticket after dispatching Nigeria 3-0 in the Round of 16, while Algeria advanced following a straight-sets victory over Senegal.

Victory over the Algerians will propel Malkia Strikers into the semi-finals against the winner between Cameroon and Uganda, keeping Kenya's dual pursuit of an 11th continental title and direct qualification for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games firmly on course.
