Catholic Archbishop Muheria criticises gov't over unfulfilled promises

Nyeri Metropolitan Archbishop Most Rev Anthony Muheria has criticised President William Ruto and his Kenya Kwanza administration over sustained unfulfilled promises to the country.

Speaking at the Maralal Diocese Silver Jubilee celebrations held at Maralal Cathedral in Samburu County, Muheria said there is a need for leaders to be accountable to the country through honest leadership, rather than using lies to gain political popularity.

“It is a moment to call especially to men in leadership who must keep being the stewards and protectors of what is right, of what is honest, and above all of what is truth. Because if we are truthful to ourselves, to what we say and to those around us, then we would hold society secure. But when we let deception, dishonesty and lack of truth prevail, even in our own families, they crumble. Let us avoid using lies to gain popularity for no reason,” he said.

On Labour Day celebrations, Muheria reiterated the need for employers to prioritise their workers’ welfare by uplifting their lives—sentiments echoed by his host Bishop Hieronymus Joya and local leaders who graced the occasion.

“Knowing the difficulties of our workers, I add to Bishop Joya’s words that we hope their lives can be uplifted. At the same time, for those who are employers, let us give workers what is right,” Muheria urged.

His words were echoed by Maralal Bishop Hieronymus Joya, who said: “Wanasiasa na viongozi pia wataona umuhimu wa kuheshimu wafanyikazi, kupatia wafanyikazi nafasi ili waweze kujiimarisha, kujitafutia kazi na kuendeleza familia.”

On her part, Samburu Woman Representative Pauline Lenguris expressed her dissatisfaction with the government’s move to list the area as a moderate drought zone.
