Police in Busia are hot on the heels of unknown suspects who broke into a car and stole Ksh.2.14 million in cash.

The unknown gang was captured in CCTV footage on Friday as they vandalized the car that was parked at Western Ambiance Hotel in Butula.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said the victim, a 47-year-old man, had withdrawn the money from a bank and stashed some of it in a bag in the trunk of his car and the rest on the rear seat.

He stopped at the hotel for a lunch break before proceeding with his journey.

“Shortly after take-off, he was taken aback after realizing a second bag that was in the rear seat of his car containing his clothes and more cash amounting to Ksh.144,000 was missing,” DCI stated.

DCI explained that the man quickly opened the trunk only to realize that the rest of the money, about Ksh.2 million was nowhere to be found.

He drove back to the hotel and requested CCTV footage which revealed the occurrence.

“The footage had captured occupants of an unestablished car make registration number KCM 948U use a key to gain ingress into the victim’s car, before walking back to their vehicle carrying two bags and driving off,” read the statement.

Sleuths who responded to the crime scene embarked on the quick follow-up but their operation fell short after they found the registration plates earlier recorded dumped by the roadside.

As investigations into the case are underway, DCI says that other forensic leads are being employed to pursue the perpetrators.
