Brookhurst bags top honors as two teams qualify for Yale at World Scholar's Cup

The competition, held from June 24 to 27, brought together young scholars from dozens of countries to compete in debating, collaborative writing, the Scholar's Challenge and the Scholar's Bowl. Brookhurst was represented by 24 students, split equally between the Senior and Junior divisions.

The school's biggest individual achievement came through Cheryl Otonde, who finished eighth overall in the Junior Division, placing her among the competition's top performers. Her result earned Brookhurst a trophy for the eighth-best junior scholar in addition to the medals won by the Kenyan delegation.

Every Brookhurst team returned with at least two medals, contributing to the school's haul of 60 medals across the four-day competition.

The Senior Division recorded another major success after two of Brookhurst's four teams qualified for the Tournament of Champions, the final stage of the World Scholar's Cup that will be held at Yale University in the United States later this year.

The event features the highest-performing teams from the Global Rounds, with qualification reserved for scholars who meet the competition's performance standards.

Another notable moment came during the opening ceremony when Denzyl Siele was selected to carry the Kenyan flag for the Senior Division, representing the country before participants from around the world.

Brookhurst's Junior Division also posted strong results but will not progress to the Tournament of Champions because most of the team's members are aged between 10 and 12 years, below the minimum age requirement of 13 years for the Yale competition.

The World Scholar's Cup is an international academic tournament that challenges students to apply knowledge across a broad range of subjects while testing their analytical thinking, teamwork and communication skills.

Students compete in teams of three through written assessments, debates and collaborative events built around an annual global theme.
