Boxing Federation of Kenya (BFK) has selected 21
boxers; 13 men and 8 women for Africa Zone 3 championship to be held on April
18-22 in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
With just over a week to the competition, head coach
Benjamin Musa says the team is currently intensifying its preparations at the
Mathare depot hall here in Nairobi in readiness for the event.
"The team is progressing well with training after
the women's team arrived from India where they took part in the World Championship.
Upon their return we started training immediately together with the men's team
who will also use the Zone 3 competitions to prepare for the men’s World
Championships which will be held next month," said Musa.
Among the male boxers who made the cut are; Boniface
Mugunde, David Karanja, Shaffi Bakari and Samuel Njau.
"We are stepping up our preparations very well
and we thank God for that. Preparations and even competitions are not easy, you
have to dedicate yourself fully which is what we are doing for now at Mathare
depot," said Mugunde.
The women's team includes; Frizah Anyango, Amina
Martha, Elizabeth Andiego and Christine Ongare.
"I have had many challenges in previous Zone 3
championships and now I have to work extra hard to make sure I succeed. And
even if I get gold in any African competition, my dream still remains to win
gold outside of Africa," Ongare said.
Kenya finished second in last year's competition held
in the Democratic Republic of Congo after winning 18 medals while the hosts
won the overall title.
