BB Bread FC delivered a stunning upset in the FKF Cup round of 32 on Sunday, defeating Gor Mahia 1-0 at Nyayo National Stadium to advance to the round of 16.
Dennis Mutheni scored the only goal of the game in the 84th minute, finding the net just one minute after coming on as a substitute to send the lower-tier side through and eliminate the league leaders.
The victory adds to BB Bread's impressive cup run, having already ousted AFC Leopards in the round of 64 a month ago via post-match penalties after a 2-2 draw.
Against Gor Mahia, BB Bread defended stoutly for most of the match, limiting the favourites to few clear chances despite Gor's dominance in possession.
The underdogs grew in confidence as the game progressed, and Mutheni's late strike proved decisive in a tense encounter.
The result is a major blow for Gor Mahia, who exited the competition early after losing last season's final 2-1 to Nairobi United. The defeat leaves them to concentrate solely on the league title race, where they currently lead the standings.
For BB Bread FC, the win marks back-to-back giant-killings against two of Kenyan football's biggest clubs, underlining their ability to compete and thrive in knockout football.
Their round of 16 opponents will be determined following the completion of the remaining round-of-32 ties.
