COTU Secretary General Francis Atwoli has hit out at Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua, accusing him of promoting tribal politics and saying his remarks risk polarising the country.

Speaking in Muhoroni Constituency during the burial of a union member, Atwoli said he would like to see Gachagua cleared by the courts to vie for the presidency, insisting he lacks the capacity to unseat President William Ruto at the ballot.

“He is the worst tribalist,” Atwoli said.

“Naweza taka korti imuachilie ndio akuje hapa ashindane na Rais Ruto ndio ajue kwa nini punda hakumea pembe,” he added.

Atwoli also accused the former Deputy President of waking up to spread hate, saying the opposition lacks the ideals and strength to challenge Ruto in 2027.

“Anaamka asubuhi ni hate… ajue sisi tuko na tunaonana na yeye,” he said.

Atwoli further defended the broad-based government arrangement, saying Raila Odinga chose to join it despite having significant political influence, while dismissing sections of the opposition as “conmen and extortionists”.

“Raila alituacha kwa broad-based government… hawa wengine ni conmen na extortionists,” Atwoli said.
