Athletes chase national team places at KDF championship

Athletes are using the ongoing 46th Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) Track and Field Championships as an opportunity to secure places in the national team ahead of future international assignments.
The championships, which began on June 10 and end on June 12 at the Ulinzi Sports Complex in Lang'ata, entered a crucial stage on Wednesday with the men's 5000 metres semi-finals.
The race attracted nearly 30 competitors, all seeking qualification for the final scheduled for Friday.
Dancun Waweru crossed the finish line first in a time of 13:57.70 and said he was pleased with his performance.
"I met my expectations today, and I thank my fans for their support. I will do my best to bring the win home," said Waweru.
The runner added that he hopes to earn a place in the national team that will be selected after the championships.
"My goal is to be part of the national team that will be formed after the final race," he added.
Nels Ruto finished second after clocking 14:09.96 and also set his sights on a strong performance in the final.
"I am praying to God to help me prepare well for the final on Friday," said Ruto.
The athlete expressed confidence that he can improve on his performance and deliver for his team.
"I want to improve my time in the final, and I promise I will not let my team down," he said.
With the final rounds set for Friday, athletes will be looking to produce strong performances as they seek national team selection and top honours at the KDF Championships.
