'Ata ukiongeza kura Uganda, wewe ni one term!' Kalonzo slams Ruto over Murkomen’s border mobilisation

Wiper Patriotic Front leader Kalonzo Musyoka has accused President William Ruto’s administration of planning to influence the 2027 General Election by mobilising voters across the Uganda border.

Speaking during a political rally in Busia County on Saturday, Kalonzo questioned recent reports of political mobilisation in the Ugandan border and linked them to recent remarks and actions by senior government officials.

“Nia yetu na lengo letu kubwa ni kurejesha kenya kwa nchi inayotawaliwa kisheria. We are here to rescue the nation. Look at our fellow Ugandans who are our people…he has seen that hesabu haingiiani and decided that they come to Kenya, they be given IDs so that they vote for Ruto. Ata akiwachukua huko Uganda, yeye ni one term,” Kalonzo said.

The Ukombozi Alliance Party leader was reacting to concerns raised by DP leader JB Muturi over what he described as efforts that could undermine the independence of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

Muturi on his part challenged the electoral commission to demonstrate its independence ahead of the 2027 polls, while questioning the conduct of Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen.

He claimed that the duo faced electoral setbacks in the 2013 and 2017 elections, before accusing President Ruto of being responsible for what he described as electoral theft.

“Hio miaka kumi na tano nikiwa na Raila tuliona shida; tukaibiwa uchaguzi 2013, 2017 tukarudi pale, tukashida, tena hatukushinda; tukakuja kugundua mwizi mkubwa wa kura ata si Uhuru, ni Ruto mwenyewe,” he said.

“Nimejua mwizi mkubwa wa kura si Uhuru Kenyatta, ni William Ruto.”

Kalonzo also recalled past remarks directed at Raila, saying his political opponents had once threatened to transport the opposition leader to Bondo using a wheelbarrow.

“Hawa walisema watamsafirisha Baba kwenda Bondo na wheelbarrow bila kujua, na si walimsafirisha?” he said.

The Wiper leader also criticised the government over the rising cost of living and what he termed the deterioration of the education sector.

He cited his time as Education Minister, claiming credit for initiatives that expanded access to education and the establishment of the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB).

“I was the Minister for Education and I was the one who started the HELB which also benefited Ruto. But now, parents are suffering. Because of the high cost of living, kwa sababu ya kuharibu elimu ya watoto wetu, Ruto must be one term!” he said.

He further defended his record in fighting for constitutionalism and the rule of law, citing his participation in legal challenges over the proposed sale of a 15 per cent stake in Safaricom and the proposed JKIA deal, adding that he had represented Gen Z protesters who were abducted and later charged.

The Busia rallies brought together the opposition leaders as they sought to consolidate their political partnership ahead of the 2027 General Election.

On Friday, Kenya Kwanza leaders crossed into neighbouring Uganda for a cross-border political meeting that brought together political mobilisation, concerns over the movement and documentation of Kenyans living and working along the border, as well as security concerns.

Led by Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, the delegation also called for closer security cooperation between Kenya and Uganda as political activity gathers pace ahead of the 2027 polls.

The delegation arrived at Amanang Secondary School in Bukwo District, where they were hosted by Kongasis MP Brian Kapyagon.

Murkomen sought to ease concerns over cross-border movement, assuring citizens of neighbouring countries that they would remain free to live and work in Kenya as long as they have the required legal documents.
