Gor Mahia head coach Charles Akonnor has lauded his team’s tactical discipline after a hard-fought 2-1 victory over APS Bomet at Kericho Green Stadium on Sunday.
The win secured three points and extended K’Ogalo’s lead at the top of the FKF Premier League table to six points.
Akonnor explained that the team approached the match with caution, focusing on compact play and high pressing to disrupt APS.
"These were very crucial three points. We remember what they did to us in the first leg, which is why we were very cautious, especially considering the state of the pitch,” Akonnor said.
“Tactically, we aimed to be compact and set them up by pressing, which led to the first goal. The boys are processing everything very well, and it makes us very happy."
Gor struck early, with Ebenezer Assifuah finishing Alpha Onyango’s cutback in the sixth minute. Despite several missed chances and spirited pressure from APS, Gor held a 1–0 lead at halftime.
Jackson Dwang doubled the advantage in the 81st minute after a defensive lapse, scoring his first goal for the club. APS responded quickly through substitute Hansel Ochieng, setting up a tense finish, but Gor held firm to secure maximum points.
Despite the narrow loss, APS coach Sammy ‘Pamzo’ Omollo praised his players for their composure and resilience against a more experienced Gor side. He noted that small mistakes cost them but that the team showed great character throughout the contest.
"I’m really impressed by the way my boys played, especially building from the back," Omollo said. "We made a mistake that led to the first goal, but we will keep playing like that. We really pushed Gor because they are very experienced and knew how to manage the game, especially when leading 2-0."
With the win, Gor Mahia top the league with 43 points, six ahead of AFC Leopards, who dropped points in their Saturday clash away to Bandari FC.
