Athletics Kenya Friday announced dates change for
the national trials ahead of the World Athletics U20 Championships, as the
country intensifies preparations for the global showpiece set for August in
Eugene, United States.
In a communication released on Friday, April 17, the federation confirmed that the trials will now be held from May 21 to 23 at Nyayo National Stadium.
According to Athletics Kenya, the adjustment is
aimed at allowing sufficient time to complete administrative processes and
finalise team requirements ahead of the championships, which will run from
August 4 to 9 in Eugene.
The move comes as Kenya looks to build on its
impressive performance at the 2024 edition in Lima, Peru, where the team
finished fifth globally and second in Africa with a haul of seven medals—three
gold, three silver, and one bronze.
Standout performances in middle- and long-distance
events once again underlined the country’s dominance in endurance races,
including a 1-2 finish in the men’s 3000m steeplechase.
Historically, Kenya remains one of the most
successful nations in the competition, ranking second overall behind the United
States in total medal count.
The country has amassed over 180 medals and has
topped the standings multiple times, including during the 2021 edition held in
Nairobi.
With the revised timeline now in place, athletes and
coaches are expected to recalibrate their training programs as the battle for
national team slots intensifies.
Athletics Kenya indicated that further details,
including the list of invited athletes and selection criteria, will be
communicated in due course.
The earlier trials could prove crucial in sharpening
Kenya’s competitive edge as it eyes another strong outing on the global stage.
