The initiative is bringing the anti-doping watchdog officials face to face with some of Kenya’s top athletes.

The education drive targeted both elite and upcoming athletes preparing for international assignments, with ADAK focusing on awareness and prevention amid growing scrutiny over doping violations involving Kenyan athletes in recent years.

During the sessions, athletes were educated on the World Anti-Doping Agency prohibited list, safe use of medication, Therapeutic Use Exemptions (TUEs), whereabouts requirements, supplement risks and the importance of a food-first nutrition approach.

ADAK Principal Education Officer Kennedy Mwai said athlete education remains one of the strongest tools in safeguarding the integrity of Kenyan athletics.

“ADAK remains firmly committed to protecting the integrity of sport through continuous education and engagement with athletes. We want every athlete to understand that clean sport is a shared responsibility,” said Mwai during one of the sessions.

He added: “Issues such as Therapeutic Use Exemptions and the safe use of medication are not just technical rules, but essential safeguards that ensure fairness, protect health and preserve careers. Informed athletes are empowered athletes, and that is the foundation of Kenya’s clean sport future.”

The programme saw ADAK officials visit ISS Athletics Training Camp, Hussein Training Camp, 2 Running Camp — home to marathon world record holder Sebastian Sawe — Kiprun Athletics Camp, Rosa Associates Camp, Nandi Highlands Athletics Camp, Newton Agency Athletics Camp, Asics Chojo Women Training Camp, Global Sports Communication Camp, High Altitude Camp, Kapsabet Junior Athletics Camp, Golazo Athletics Camp, Posso Sports Camp, St Patrick’s Iten Camp, Taunet Running Camp and All 4 Running Shoe for Africa Camp.

The forums also gave athletes and coaches an opportunity to openly seek clarification on anti-doping procedures, particularly on medication and supplements, areas that continue to expose many athletes to unintentional doping violations.

Coaches from the camps welcomed the initiative, terming it timely and necessary for the next generation of athletes.

At Kiprun Athletics Camp, coach Dr Byron Kipchumba also lauded the programme, particularly the sessions on Therapeutic Use Exemptions, medication and supplement awareness.

“We truly appreciate the continued collaboration and the effort invested in educating our athletes. The topics covered, particularly around Therapeutic Use Exemptions, safe use of medication and supplement awareness, are essential in protecting athletes from inadvertent doping,” he said.

“This kind of guidance is invaluable in supporting both performance and career longevity.”

Kenya has in recent years heightened anti-doping measures through increased testing, compliance programmes and athlete education as authorities seek to restore confidence in the country’s athletics system.

In March 2026, Kenya was officially removed from the World Anti-Doping Agency’s compliance watchlist following a series of reforms spearheaded by the Anti-Doping Agency of Kenya (ADAK) .

While the decision marked a major milestone for the country’s athletics system, it did not completely erase the shadow cast by years of doping cases that had placed one of the world’s athletics giants under intense global scrutiny.

However, the clearance signaled the end of a period of heightened monitoring that pushed Kenya to overhaul its anti-doping structures, tighten compliance measures and intensify athlete education in a bid to restore confidence in the country’s athletics reputation.
