Kisumu All Stars have kicked off preparations for the upcoming National Super League (NSL) season, with players already returning to camp as the club looks to bounce back from a disappointing campaign.
Speaking to Citizen Digital, head coach Rashid
Ochieng confirmed that pre-season training is underway, with the technical
bench assessing the current squad to determine which players will be retained
and who will be released ahead of the new season.
"We have already identified the areas
that need strengthening. We have also identified the players we want to sign,
and now we are waiting for them to report," said Ochieng.
The former NSL
champions narrowly avoided relegation last season, finishing just one place
above the drop zone. Ochieng attributed the team's struggles to the departure
of several key players following the withdrawal of sponsorship by the Kisumu
County Government.
According to the
coach, the loss of financial support severely disrupted the club's plans and
weakened the squad throughout the season.
"Our
recruitment was not good. The County Government of Kisumu withdrew the team's
sponsorship, and we lost about 20 of our best players. You cannot keep a
talented squad without paying them," he added.
Despite those
setbacks, Kisumu All Stars are now focused on rebuilding. Ochieng revealed that
the club has already identified several potential signings as it seeks to
strengthen the squad ahead of the new NSL season.
The coach
expressed confidence that with quality recruitment and a well-structured
pre-season programme, the team will be better prepared to compete and avoid the
struggles that defined last season.
