While leaving MCK Kaaga primary school & junior secondary in Meru, the video shows a staggering number of high-end fuel guzzlers exiting a shabby local school gate as leaders accompanying the president leave the venue.
In total, we counted over 50 high-powered vehicles are seen being driven down a sketchy tarmac road as locals gather to marvel and take videos.
While not entirely made up of President Ruto's presidential motorcade, Kenyans noted with concern the extreme level of expenditure displayed by a government that has repeatedly claimed it inherited a 'dilapidated economy' and is seeking austerity measures to tame government wastage.
Part of the convoy was made up of Meru Governor, Cabinet Secretaries, and Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua among other government officials. We are also not saying the president should drive around with three cars because he must be protected at all costs but...
While sharing the video on Twitter, @Ohta_Ryota sparked outrage in a tweet titled, "Warning: Graphic Content for Tax Payers."
In reaction, a user @Ikemchingy wrote, "African leaders have mortgaged the lives of their people for few fancy vehicles."
Another user @Brian_Tallguy wrote, "Someone can mistake that gate to be that of a Toyota factory."
Some Kenyans, however, came to the President's defence, saying that he was absolutely right to be accompanied by that number of vehicles.
"Mimi nko Sawa kabisa. Ningekua yeye ningefanya hivo. Nothing wrong hapa!" Twitter influencer Wesley Kibande wrote.
Popular activist Boniface Mwangi too joined the debate and, as usual, harangued the entire show while also berating the police force.
"The drivers of these vehicles and the bodyguards protecting the politicians live worse than our village dogs. Overworked, underpaid slaves housed in iron sheet houses, " he wrote.
On TikTok, the shock was just as palpable with users shocked at the sheer number of vehicles that had attended the event and wondering why they didn't just send the money used to fuel the guzzlers.
