An Eldoret Magistrate's Court has ordered a lorry driver to pay Ksh.4,000 fine or be jailed for one day after he pleaded guilty to transporting logs without a permit.

Alfred Wandera Juma caused laughter when he told Resident Magistrate Naima Chelagat Kirui that he would prefer to spend one day behind bars and secure his freedom rather than pay the fine.

Earlier, after pleading guilty to the charge, the accused shocked the court when he said he was willing to pay a Kshs.10,000 fine.

This was after the magistrate asked him what amount he could pay as a fine now that he had been found guilty of transporting logs without a permit.

Wandera admitted before the court that on October 17, 2026, at Soy area in Uasin Gishu County, being the driver of motor vehicle Reg No. 455 D, make Mercedes Benz, he was found ferrying logs from Eldoret to Kitale without a permit.

Juma was intercepted by police following a tip-off from members of the public along the Eldoret-Kitale highway while transporting the tree logs without a permit.
