At least nine people have been confirmed dead after a Matatu they were travelling in ran over an Improvised Explosive Device(IED) on the Arabia-Mandera Highway.

The Matatu was headed to Mandera town during the Monday 6 a.m incident that also left six others with serious injuries.

North Eastern region police boss Bunei Rono confirmed the incident and was quoted by the Nation saying one suspect had been arrested and was being grilled by detectives.

“On Monday January 31, 2022, around seven in the morning, a civilian vehicle plying Mandera-Arabia road was attacked with an IED. It happened approximately 8kms from Mandera town. The attackers numbering around six then reinforced the IED attack with AK47 rifles," the police boss was quoted as saying.

The latest comes amid a slew of terror alerts; with the US Embassy urging vigilance over an impending terror attack in the country.

Earlier, German , French, Dutch consulates had issued similar warnings , urging their  citizens to avoid crowded places including public events.

Kenyan authorities last week allayed fears of a looming terror attack, with police spokesperson Bruno Shioso saying Kenya was yet to receive official reports from any foreign governments.
