The Chief Magistrate’s Court found three people guilty in a case under the Prohibition of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) Act in Narok.

John Oisa and Angela Saoli were convicted for failing to report a commission of an offence, contrary to Section 24 of the Act. The court ordered each to pay a fine of Ksh.200,000, or serve a two-year term in prison for failure to pay the fine.

The duo was also convicted for aiding and abetting FGM contrary to Section 20(b) of the Act. They were fined Ksh.200,000 or a two-year jail term.

The court further fined each of them Ksh.15,000 for failing to protect a child from harmful cultural rites, as opposed to Section 14 of the Children’s Act.

The owner of the premises where the offence was committed, Peter Ole Kilerai, identified as the minor’s grandfather, was also charged to pay a fine of Ksh.200,000 or serve two years in prison.
