At least 17 pilgrims from St Matthias Mulumba Catholic Parish in Mikindani, Mombasa, have been killed in a road accident at Salama along the Nairobi–Mombasa Highway in Makueni County.

The pilgrims were travelling to the National Shrine in Subukia, Nakuru County, for the National Prayer Day when the accident occurred.

The Archdiocese of Mombasa confirmed the deaths in a condolence message issued by the Archbishop's Office, describing the incident as an “untimely passing” of the 17 pilgrims.

The Archdiocese said the victims were members of St Matthias Mulumba Parish in Mikindani.

Several other people were injured in the accident and are receiving medical attention.

The circumstances that led to the crash have not yet been established, with further details expected from authorities.

The National Prayer Day is scheduled to take place at the National Shrine in Subukia, where pilgrims from different parts of the country were expected to gather.

The Archdiocese of Mombasa has called for prayers for the repose of the victims' souls and for their families, the parish and the wider Archdiocese.
