Ten protesters arrested in Nairobi during demonstrations over the rising cost of fuel have been charged with blocking the free movement of people and causing inconvenience.

The protesters were arraigned at the City Court on Wednesday, where they denied the charges before the presiding magistrate.

Two others did not take plea after an advocate representing the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) noted they were minors.

The court directed that the two be escorted for age assessment by the Officer Commanding Station (OCS) at Central Police Station by Thursday, April 23.

The magistrate further ordered the release of the remaining accused persons on a cash bail of Ksh.3,000 each.

The 12 were arrested on Tuesday after attempting to stage demonstrations within the Central Business District. Anti-riot police dispersed the protesters, with authorities saying the arrests were aimed at preventing disruption of business and maintaining public order.

The protests were driven by growing public anger over high fuel prices and the rising cost of living, with mobilisation largely taking place online and without clear leadership.

Those charged include Julias Kamau Kimani, Elisha Ochieng, Collins Otieno Ochieng, Emmanuel Yegon, Dickson Mworia, Brian Mwenda, Jeremiah Mwau, Michael Ngige, Emmanuel Muchui, and Joshua Okayo.
