Wananchi Opinion: What you should do now that KCSE results are out

By Abol Kings

The release of the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examination results is a significant milestone in the lives of students, their parents, and the larger society.

This moment often brings with it a mix of emotions, ranging from joy and celebration to anxiety and disappointment.

How students and parents respond to these results can profoundly impact the next steps in their academic and career journeys.

Here are some key steps that students and parents should consider to make the most of this critical period.

Celebrate Achievements. Regardless of the results, students and parents should take time to celebrate the completion of this important phase in education.

Even if the grades do not meet initial expectations, finishing secondary school is an achievement in itself. Celebrating hard work and resilience can help boost the student’s morale and build confidence for the future.

Review and Understand the Results. The first step is for both students and parents to review the results carefully.

It is essential to understand the grades and their implications for various opportunities such as university admission, technical training, or career choices.

Parents should provide emotional support and help students interpret the results realistically.

It is important to emphasize that examination outcomes, while significant, are not the sole determinant of a student’s future success.

Explore Available Options. After understanding the results, students and parents should explore the various pathways available.

These options may include: University Education-Students who meet the minimum entry requirements for university programs can begin researching institutions and courses of interest.

Technical and Vocational Training-For students who may not qualify for university admission, technical and vocational education training (TVET) institutions offer valuable skills that lead to rewarding careers.

Re-Sitting the Exam: In some cases, students may opt to re-sit the KCSE to improve their grades. Parents should discuss this option carefully, considering the time, cost, and commitment involved.

Set Goals and Create a Plan. Once a decision is made on the next step to take, students should set clear goals and develop a plan to achieve them.

Whether pursuing higher education, vocational training, or starting a business, having a roadmap ensures focus and direction. Parents should encourage discipline and consistency as their children transition to the next phase.

Plan Finances. The next step in education or training often requires financial preparation. Parents should assess their financial capacity and explore scholarships, bursaries, or student loans where necessary.

In Kenya, organizations like the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) and other sponsors provide financial aid to deserving students.

Learn from the Experience. Both students and parents should view the KCSE results as a learning opportunity. Successes can reinforce positive habits, while challenges can highlight areas for growth.

Encouraging a growth mindset ensures that students remain motivated to pursue their goals despite setbacks.

Offer Emotional Support. Not all students will meet their academic goals, and some may experience disappointment or frustration.

Parents should provide a supportive environment to help students process their emotions. Encouraging open conversations can help students express their feelings and reduce stress.

Parents should avoid comparing their children’s results with those of others, as this can lead to unnecessary pressure and feelings of inadequacy.

Seek Professional Guidance. Career counselling and mentorship are critical during this transition period. Parents and students can seek advice from career counsellors, teachers, or mentors to gain insights into various career paths.

Guidance on aligning personal interests, abilities, and career goals is essential for making informed decisions.

Engage in Productive Activities. Before embarking on the next academic or career step, students have time to engage in meaningful activities such as volunteering, internships, or community projects.

These activities build character, enhance skills, and boost a student’s CV. Parents should encourage their children to make productive use of this time.

Foster a Positive Mindset. Finally, it is vital to cultivate a positive outlook regardless of the results. Parents should remind students that success in life is not solely defined by academic performance.

Attributes like perseverance, adaptability, and a willingness to learn are equally important.

By fostering a supportive and optimistic environment, parents can help their children navigate this critical period with confidence and resilience.
