Elephant numbers in Tsavo rose from around 6,000 in the mid-1990s to almost 15,000 in 2021, according to the Kenya Wildlife Service © Tony KARUMBA / AFP
Boru Malicha, a 32-year-old man, was attacked by the elephant on Wednesday evening.
Confirming the incident, James Kemei, a Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) officer stationed in Marsabit, regretted the tragedy, adding that efforts are being made to curb human-wildlife conflict.
Residents have protested, saying this is not the first incident in which jumbos are wreaking havoc in the area.
“We have complained and asked KWS and the county government to put in place lasting strategies to deal with the nuisance of wild animals, especially elephants and hyenas, but no action is taken,” one local said.
In recent weeks, there was another case of a lion attacking livestock in the Karare area in Saku.
KWS has said the families of those affected will receive compensation.
