A sombre mood engulfed Cheboyo area, Chepalungu, in Bomet county, after irate members of the public lynched a man who had hacked his neighbour to death.

Julius Korir, 39, walked past his victim, Henry Langat, 40, on a pathway, and proceeded to hack him using a panga after a brief altercation. The man died on the spot.

Chepalungu sub-county police boss, Phanton Analo, on Tuesday, said members of the public who heard the commotion rushed to the scene, only to find the man was dead and the body had deep cuts on the back of the neck.

The suspect fled from the scene, but members of the public traced him to his house and lynched him.

Police recovered the panga stained with blood.

The two bodies were taken to Longisa Hospital mortuary.

According to Mogor location chief Joseph Malel, the suspect had previously been reprimanded for other criminal activities.
