One journalist was on Monday left unconscious and two others nursing serious injuries after they were attacked while covering a police raid at a suspected chang’aa den in Katine village, in Machakos.

The police have been conducting a series of raids in the area in an attempt to contain illicit brew business.

Reports indicate that the three journalists were attacked by suspected chang’aa brewers and their sympathizers.

Makueni Union of Journalists (Mujo) has identified the three journalists as Boniface Mutisya of Mutongoi TV, Mike Ndunda of Kamba TV and Richard Munyao of Athiani FM.

Mujo has issued a strong-worded statement condemning the Monday incident.

“We condemn the attack to three journalists who were attacked earlier today as they covered illicit brew raid in Katine area of Matungulu,” read the Mujo statement in part.

Machakos Journalists chairperson Erastus Mulwa also condemned the incident.

He said: “The attack on our colleagues is an attack on freedom of the media and we condemn it in strongest terms. We urge law enforcement agencies to expeditiously bring the culprits to book.”

Mujo has asked the police to investigate the matter and arrest the culprits.

The three journalists are currently undergoing treatment at the Ruai hospital in Tala.
