The changing face of Nakuru's abandoned silos

From a distance, the silos in Cyprus Park in Nakuru City could pass as an abandoned structure.

This changes when you get into the park, ushering in signs of life in the silos that were once a storage facility for the National Cereals and Produce board.

Today, the 3000-metric-tons-capacity silos have been converted to an ultra-modern massage parlor. A few metres away, another one has been turned into a conference hall, adjacent to a theatre and a gym.

The brainchild of 54-year-old Joseph Koech, the park has a wide range of amenities, with entrepreneurs eager to tap into the opportunities that the newly birthed city promises. "The idea is to have a model city outside the capital Nairobi. We are focusing on providing a conducive environment where residents can visit and enjoy services offered," Koech noted.

Plans are underway to convert one of the silos into a state of the art gaming facility. An ultra modern amphitheater is also cropping up. The once busy tarmacs are replete with joggers and leisure cyclists.

Speaking to Citizen Digital Ben Ndonga, a local, urged the county government to partner with private investors to make use of now-dormant government facilities. "They should encourage private investors to facelift abandoned facilities and transform them to recreational facilities," he said.
