More than 20 families in Mauthini area of Tharaka Nithi County have been left homeless after their houses were swept away following heavy rains.

There were no fatalities or injuries reported.

The affected were unable to salvage their household items and were forced to seek refuge in the houses of well-wishers.

Mary Kagendo, one of the affected, on Thursday said, "At first I didn't realise that the house was flooding, but before I could tell what was happening, my house had already been destroyed. The roof came off and the whole structure came crashing down."

Doris Kawira, another resident, said, "I heard a loud bang and the destruction started in the kitchen. Before I knew it, the whole house had come down."

The families have now appealed to the government to come to their rescue and offer alternative shelter, food and clothing.
