Shock in Embu as residents discover carcasses of 31 donkeys, shallow graves at homestead
According to Josphat Maina and Milka, who are residents of the area, the culprit, one Boniface Muli, had turned his homestead into a slaughter house.
According to Mwea sub-county public health officer Racheal Nyambura Njoroge, residents discovered 31 heads of donkeys and several marked graves.
"We were shocked to find donkey heads, several carcasses and graves in this homestead. We suspect the culprits wanted to transport the carcasses before police discovered them and they escaped," she said.
Nyambura said the carcasses will be disposed according to health and safety regulations.
Angry residents raised concerns that they are likely to have unknowingly been eating donkey meat.
"We want action taken against the suspect, whom we suspect has been working with people outside this village to steal our livestock and ferry them to be sold in the major towns," Maina said.
The Mwea sub-county security team led by Mwea Deputy County Commissioner Marete and Mwea sub-county police commander Willy Simba arrived warned residents against rushing to purchase cheap and uninspected meat.
The security team said they are looking for the culprits.
