Traders who have been braving the scorching sun at Wich Lum Beach in Bondo sub-county have a reason to smile following the construction of a new market shade.

The market shade constructed by the Siaya County government was handed over to the traders on Friday.

The chairman of the small-scale traders at Wich Lum market, Simon Juma Odiyo said that the construction was long overdue.

"We are happy that we no longer have to work under the scorching sun," he said.

Lilian Auma Okelo, another trader, said she and her colleagues had been working under difficult conditions for more than seven years.

The market shades will cater for up to 46 traders in the first phase as plans are made to expand the project and identify more land for traders, according to the county assembly.
