Residents of Konoin Sub-county, in Bomet, are alarmed by the recent surge in motorcycle theft, with at least four cases reported in the past two weeks.

The spike has left boda boda operators fearing for their livelihoods and calling for urgent intervention.

In one incident, John Kipng’etich, a boda boda rider from Kimulot, lost his motorcycle while picking up a passenger.

“I parked my bike for just a moment, but when I turned back, it was gone. This bike was my only source of income — I don’t know what to do now,” he lamented.

Another operator, Samuel Koech from Chepchabas, woke up to an empty yard where his motorcycle had been parked the night before.
“I locked the gate and ensured everything was secure. But in the morning, the bike was gone. It’s heartbreaking because I worked so hard to buy it,” Koech said.

The rising cases have sparked fear among riders, with some avoiding late-night trips or forming groups for safety.
“We’re living in fear. Every day, we wonder who will be next. We need more security patrols, especially at night,” said Ronny Kibet, a rider at Cheptalal stage.

Local authorities have acknowledged the growing concern and assured residents that measures are being put in place.

“We are aware of the rising cases and have increased patrols in the affected areas. We urge the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity,” said the authorities.
