Railway or Rubbish Site? Nairobi Residents Call for Urgent Cleanup

Residents of Nairobi have raised concern over careless dumping of garbage on a section of the railway line at the Lusaka Road intersection, near Nairobi city stadium.

The garbage has spread over time, and is almost covering sections of an active railway line used by commuter trains plying the Nairobi, Makadara, Dandora, Pipeline, Imara Daima, Syokimau, Embakasi village, Mwiki, Githurai, Kahawa West and Ruiru stations route.

Residents of Nairobi want the county government and other relevant stakeholders to jointly deal with the garbage menace. 

The ongoing rains have only worsened the garbage situation in Nairobi, with a number of roads and walkways muddied and dirty.

Mama Essene Moraa who resides in Pangani, Nairobi, told Wananchi Reporting that many roads in the area have been turned into dump sites.

“Juja road is sinking in garbage already, and no one seems to care. Mountains of rotting garbage has been sitting on this one location for almost one year,” said Moraa.

It’s the same situation in Nairobi estates like Pipeline, Dandora, Kayole, Nyamavilla, Kariobangi, Makadara, Soweto, Mukuru kwa Njenga, Kware, Tassia, Gikomba, Muthurwa, and others.

Residents are worried the situation could lead to outbreak of diseases especially now that it is raining.
