Probe in Garissa as thugs, armed with AK47 rifles, raid M-Pesa shop, steal Ksh. 1 million

Garissa police boss speaks on robbery at M-Pesa shop.

Investigations have been launched following a robbery with violence case at an M-Pesa shop in Garissa town on Thursday night where thugs made away with Ksh. 1 million.

CCTV footage showed an armed thug gaining access to the shop which also sells other convenience items and aiming his gun at the attendant before ordering him to hand over proceeds from the day.

One of the store attendants could be seen kneeling down, with his hands up as his colleague handed over money.

The thug was soon joined by another group of four thugs, who were scanning the outside of the shop to ensure no one comes in, before they all fled with the money and some of the items from the store.

Speaking on the incident, one of the attendants, Shaffie, said, “They raided the store at around 7.40pm and we were ordered to get on the floor and hand over all the money.”

The M-Pesa shop attendant said that Ksh. 1.3 million was stolen during the incident.

He said, “They roughed me up, beat me and threw me to the ground as they took the money. I might even have internal injuries.”

The Garissa police boss, John Sambayo, said, “We got a report from the store owner that his shop had been raided by criminals who had AK47s.”

He said officers have launched a manhunt for the criminals and urged members of the public to report any details they may have about the incident.
