Fishermen in Migori County have decried the inaccessibility of roads linking the beaches to the markets, hampering their ability to transport fish efficiently and threatening their livelihoods.

Led by the County Beach Management Unit (BMU) Chairperson, Mark Maloba, the fishermen highlighted that out of the 28 beaches in Migori County, only two are easily accessible.

Maloba emphasized the dire situation, stating that most beaches are cut off due to the poor road network, making it difficult for us to ferry their catch to the markets.

He further appealed to the county government for urgent road repairs.

“The bad roads have caused many fishermen to incur losses because they cannot get their fish to market in time."

Maloba also highlighted the impact on their income and the local economy.

"We are suffering because our roads are impassable, and this has severely affected our livelihoods. We urge the government to prioritize road repairs to support our community."

Meanwhile, the county BMU chairperson has called on the county government to meet with the fishermen community to discuss their concerns directly.

They hope that this will prompt infrastructural improvements which will help restore their livelihoods and boost fish trade in the region.
