Pedestrians forced to hop over guardrails to cross Waiyaki Way

Nairobians working along the recently upgraded Waiyaki Way have had to literally hop over guardrails to cross a section of the dangerous road.

This is a common happening at a spot just a few metres from the Nairobi West Expressway toll station.

The ‘hopping’ happens mostly in the mornings – and in the evenings – when office workers are heading to work or back home after a day’s toil.

A Mr. Ben told Wananchi Reporting that most of them are forced to jump over the guardrails to cross the road because the only two available footbridges along the stretch are far apart.

One footbridge is erected at the ABC Place, and another one at the Sarit Centre bus stop, just a few meters from the Westland stage.

This, according to Ben, leaves a majority of Kenyans working along the highway to their own devices.

“You don’t expect people to walk all the way to the ABC Place, or the Sarit Centre. That’s why you find us jumping over the rails to cross to the other side,” said Ben.

“It would help many people if a third footbridge was erected just before the Nairobi West Expressway toll station, which is very dangerous,” he adds.

The Sarit Centre footbridge was erected a few months ago.
