A section of residents from Litein, Kericho, have called on the county government to intervene and address rising cases of insecurity and the poor state of infrastructure.
The locals said that the area has no street lights, making it an easy target for thugs who raid traders’ shops.
The residents also decried perennial water shortages, saying that they are unable to carry out their daily activities and businesses.
Nancy Langat, a trader at Litein market, on Monday said, “The problems at this market are so many I don’t know when to start. Firstly, this market has never been completed. We moved in and we were told works would be complete but that has never been years later.”
She continued, “The toilets don’t work, there’s no water, the place is filthy and garbage is not collected. The state of the market is making customers keep away and it’s hurting our business.”
Elijah Soi, another resident, said, “This market is in a poor state. The toilets don’t function and we wonder how traders and residents are supposed to live in such a state. The leaders are not taking responsibility and it’s a shame.”
On his part, Robert Koech, a trader, said, “The county government needs to do its job and ensure that this area is cleaned up and infrastructure works.”
The locals said that they will take to the streets if nothing is done to address their grievances.
