A multi-agency team in Ndia, Kirinyaga County, seized a consignment of illicit liquor at a homestead at  Sagana.

According to Kirinyaga-West sub-county Deputy County Commissioner John Mbugua, 90 crates of  illicit liquor,  KRA rolls of stamps with 17,000 stickers, 300 litres of ethanol, 240 liters of unpacked illicit alcohol, several bottle tops and seals were seized during a raid on Friday evening.

The multi-agency team comprising the National police service  (NPS), Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI), the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) led the raid.

Mbugua said they went to the homestead of Mathew Githinji whose son Peter Mwangi Githinji is the suspect, after a tip-off from residents that his son had been manufacturing illicit liquor in the compound.

"We were informed that  he had been carrying out the criminal activity in this homestead for a week," Mbugua said.

He said the suspect was not selling the liquor within the county, but rather transporting it outside the county.

Mbugua said four suspects who were mixing and packaging the illicit alcohol were arrested.

However, Peter Mwangi Githinji escaped.

The security team in Ndia said  they have intensified operations in the region to wipe out illicit alcohol.

"We urge members of the public to continue working with the security teams to report criminal activity," Mbugua said.

The four suspects are being held at Sagana police station as the main suspect is sought.
