Ndaragwa: Water pans to help farmers counter effects of climate change
The government is set to sink the water pans in the lower parts of the constituency, which are usually dry and experience drought from time to time.
Farmers have been urged to embrace irrigation farming using water pans and rehabilitated dams to mitigate the effects of climate change.
According to area MP George Gachagua, the water pans are a vital instrument farmers can use to collect and preserve rainwater for livestock, crop irrigation, and sometimes domestic purposes in areas regularly affected by drought.
Speaking on Monday, when inspecting Karampton Dam in Leshau Pondo Ward, the MP challenged farmers in the area to embrace irrigation in order to address the challenges of food insecurity.
He said the government is committed to rehabilitating dams and sinking more water pans in the driest parts of the constituency to help cushion farmers from the effects of climate change.
Done through the National Irrigation Board, the Karampton Water pan will come in handy in helping farmers irrigate their crops.
This is one of the areas that has for years experienced drought, forcing residents to rely on relief food.
