Nairobi residents share home remedies for flu as cold season sets in

It's cold and flu season, and cold or flu medicine is being cleared off the shelves across various estates.

With the month of July just around the corner, the flu and cold season sneaks in with a sniff or two.

For instance, it is not unusual to spot someone sniffling or sneezing during this period in Nairobi.

It almost appears as though the month of July brings with it those dreaded flu and cold viruses.

With learners currently on their mid-term break, parents and guardians are devising ways of coping with the weather.

Jacinta Achieng, a parent, says she keeps a close eye on her children during this period.

“It is so easy to catch a cold. With children, it becomes way easier,” Achieng says.

“In my home, we have literally gone back to the COVID-19 days, where we observe all preventive measures,” Grace Wanjiku said.

According to Wanjiku, besides wearing face masks when in large gatherings, they also wash their hands regularly and resort to medication when the situation worsens.

“Vitamins during this time is also important for the young ones as they are known for their efficacy on these immune system barriers,” Michael Kigen added.

Dennis Barasa however says his go-to remedy is a blend of garlic, ginger, honey and lemon concoction.

“Dawa does it for me. With the concoction, I am good to go,” he added.
