Rogue landlords in Nairobi’s Eastlands area have reportedly been dumping raw sewage onto estate feeder roads and in roadside drainage lines.

The open drainage lines on the roadsides are meant to drain excess rainwater from the roads, and not sewage coming from rented houses.

According to residents who spoke to Wananchi Reporting, the trend is common among landlords whose houses are not directly connected to the main Nairobi sewer line.

“A good example is the drainage trench along Manyanja Road, in Umoja, that has been turned into a dumping site for raw sewage,” said Alvin Kimonje, a resident of Umoja.

“Some landlords don’t want to spend Sh5,000 on a honey-sucker, and so they will hire young men to empty their septic tanks and pour the sewage on the road,” said Kimonje.

“Some of them will just pour the sewage on the estate roads which also serve as playing area for our children,” said Kimonje.

They are said to do this in the dead of the night, when most of the city is asleep.

Residents now fear that these acts could create unhygienic conditions which could lead to disease outbreak.

They are asking the Nairobi county government and the Nairobi City Water & Sewerage Company Ltd (NCWSC) to put in place tight measures and reign in on the culprits.
