Mwea rice mills privatisation case adjourned to June

The petition, filed by John Munene and Pius Njogu, questions the legality of the privatisation process, citing inadequate public participation and alleging that the move is prejudicial to rice farmers in Kirinyaga County.

The petitioners argue that the planned privatisation could negatively affect local farmers and the broader regional economy.

They are now represented by lawyer Kiguru Kahiga and a team of co-advocates, following the withdrawal of their previous counsel.

The respondents, including the Cabinet Secretary for the National Treasury and Economic Planning and the Attorney General, have already filed their responses. However, the matter was not heard, with the court opting to adjourn proceedings to allow for further review of the submissions.

The case, which was filed on December 1, 2023, remains pending before the Kerugoya High Court. Its outcome is being closely watched by farmers and other stakeholders in the region.
