Monkey invasion: Farmers count losses as wild animals destroy crops

Residents of Barut area in Nakuru Town West Constituency have expressed concern over rising cases of monkeys invading their farms.

The village borders Lake Nakuru National Park.

The residents told Wananchi Reporting that the monkeys, which move in troops, have been destroying crops on their farms – and now they are facing hunger.

The monkeys have reportedly destroyed maize crops, sweet potatoes, bananas and just about anything edible – the residents claim.

“Some of us cannot even send our children to school or to the shops because they fear running into these wild animals,” said Joyce Wanjiru Kimani, a farmer in the area.

Meanwhile, the farmers say they are staring at financial losses – and an empty stomach in the future.

“I spent a substantial amount of money to prepare the farm only for the monkeys to eat all my crops. I am not going to harvest anything this season,” Geoffrey Kamau Nyaga, a farmer in Barut told Wananchi Reporting.

The locals are asking Kenya Wildlife officials from Lake Nakuru National Park to help contain the monkeys before they clear their farms.
