Three parents have been arrested in Kuria, Migori County after their three daughters were subjected to Female Genital Mutilation (FGM).

James Omondi, the Children’s Officer for Kuria West Sub County, confirmed that the three suspects are facing charges before Kehancha Law Court.

Omondi explained that the three girls were able to identify the female circumciser responsible for performing the illegal procedure.

Efforts to apprehend the circumciser were thwarted when locals blocked the police, allowing her to narrowly escape.

Although only three cases of FGM have been reported in Kuria West Sub County, Omondi noted that there is a possibility that more girls have undergone the practice in local villages.

Police withdrew after engaging with the defiant crowd for nearly an hour. So far, 55 girls have been rescued from FGM in Kuria West Sub County, and they are currently housed in two rescue centers in the region.

This comes as stakeholders expressed concern over the continued prevalence of FGM in the area.
