Migori residents raise concern over marauding hyenas

By Stephen Agombi

Residents of Olasi zone in Got Kachola ward, Migori County, are losing sleep over rising cases of hyena attacks on their livestock.

Some of the residents told Wananchi Reporting that the marauding hyenas have become a perennial problem in the villages.

The hyenas attack goats, sheep, and cows, and of late, have ‘added’ donkeys onto their growing menu.

“Many of us have been suffering in silence. The attacks usually happen at night, almost every day. The hyenas come right into our homes to eat our animals,” said Mama Sibia Odira, a resident of Olasi.

According to the residents, the hyenas hunt in packs or even solo, invading homes in search of food.

“People here no longer leave their animals outside at night, otherwise hyenas will eat them,” said Sibia.

There is also fear that it is only a matter of time before they attack humans.

The residents are now calling upon the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) officials to address the problem.
